On this walk we visit a stretch of the Chao Phraya riverbank on the Thonburi side where diverse communities settled over the last 250 years and many still remain. It's an area that feels quite different and has had very limited developmet over the last 50 years. As we walk we pass by Thai temples, Chinese shrines, churches and mosques. Yet, this is not a tour about religion, but rather one where we explore the diverse local cultures, and tdig down into the history through stories of how these different groups arrived in the area and prospered.
We meet at Yodpiman River Walk and start by taking the local ferry across to the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya river. Here we visit to the famous Wat Kalayanamit - a Thai Temple with some Chinese influences. From here the walk begins and we will walk along a combination of backstreets and riverside paths, passing through a diverse range of neighborhoods. One such neighbourhood is the Portuguese Catholic community, known as Kudeejeen, which is famous for its’ local sponge cake. Here we will visit a local coffee shop for a quick break.
We will also visit the Princess Mother's Memorial Park, for a well deserved rest, and discover the neighboring Chinese shrine and mosque. As we walk we will see signs of the history of the area which was full of warehouses and factories until 50 years ago when the port moved further downriver.
Our walk finishes at Tha Din Daeng which is a foodies paradise. From here you have the option to find some lunch here or head across to Ratchawong pier which is the gateway to Chinatown and also allows you to get the ferry to explore Bangkok further.
This walk is about 3.5km and suitable for anyone with moderate fitness.
