This walk explores the district of Bangkok, or if translated into English, "The Village of Love". Situated along the bank of the Chao Phraya river, traders from both the East and the West started settling here in the late nineteenth century. In response to the requests from the early European settlers, Charoen Krung Road was built and became Bangkok’s first paved road. This tour follows the Charoen Krung Road and explores the stories behind the communities that settled in the Bangrak district of Bangkok.
The walk focuses on the history of the area over the last 150 years but also gives an insight into the local culture and ways of life.
You will be met your guide at BTS Saphan Taksin and following an introduction by your guide you will set out to explore. As you walk we will pass through the fascinating area of Bangrak where Chinese, Thai and Muslim communities coexist and we pass by market vendors, shops and restaurants who have been operating as family businesses for over 70 years. As we approach the Assumption Church and community the focus changes to the Europeans and the impact they had on Bangkok as the country opened up to trade with the West. As we continue we see the signs of this impacts: The first hotel in Bangkok, the first road in Bangkok, The European Embassies, The Customs House…
The tour finishes at Si Phraya Pier from where you can then jump on the river boat to continue your day or maybe head on to Chinatown. The tour is approx 3km and lasts approximately 2.5 hour. It can get very hot in Bangkok, so we will stop for breaks along the way.
As you walk don’t forget to smile and say “Sawasdee” to the people we pass by.
